President Troy LaRaviere addressed the Chicago Board of Education on Thursday, August 29th, reaffirming that a school leader contract remains his top priority. He focused on the uncertainty surrounding what’s next in Chicago’s public schools. This uncertainty only strengthens the need for a binding school leader contract, which is essential to providing the support and stability that school leaders deserve.
Speaking on behalf of members, President LaRaviere stressed that many view the ongoing discussions about the CEO’s possible removal as a distraction from the real issue: the lack of a binding contract. He emphasized that the role of the CEO has a limited impact on school leaders without this crucial agreement in place. “The argument used to support the CEO is this idea of stability… Principals have never had stability in this district because we have never had a contract,” he stated.
Both board members and principals agree that true stability and support for school leaders cannot depend on any single individual in the executive office. Instead, lasting stability will come from the terms of our contract, which remains essential regardless of who holds the leadership position.
