Who Gets Walked Out Next?

I hope you are doing well.

In the 23 years since I started my CPS career, I have never seen so many cases and investigations opened by district officials against principals and AP's. So, yesterday I spoke at the Board of Education meeting to advocate for you and all CPS administrators regarding the district's treatment of school leaders for minor alleged reporting policy and procedures missteps.

My message was as follows:

"District officials in this building have failed to communicate a clear and coherent set of policies, and they failed to get principals the staff and other resources they need to follow those policies and keep students safe. But when an incident or procedural misstep happens that is largely the result of the failure of the officials in this building, you send people out to walk principals out of their buildings for your failures. It's time to walk some people out of this building.

"Whether it be OSP, Title IX, The Law Department, or the CEO's office, the message from principals is clear: "Don't walk us out for their failures. Walk them out for their failures," and replace them with people who will get us the clear communication, support, and resources we need to keep our young people safe."

Downtown officials have been on the offensive against school leaders since the sexual misconduct scandal broke. My statement was one of many steps we're taking to repel downtown's scapegoating onslaught. Our forthcoming report from our survey of school leaders clearly shows that district officials have failed to get resources to our schools that are needed to keep our students safe, and it's time they are held responsible for that failure.
