News and Advocacy

As we continue to confront the devastating realities of the proposed SY26-27 school budgets, I want to remind every member that CPAA’s first and most urgent priority has been fighting to protect Assistant Principals as foundational positions in every school.
TAKE ACTION! Contact your elected school board members (listed by district in the table below) and remind them that YOUR CHILDREN and THEIR SCHOOLS MATTER.
If you need help balancing the books, ask the leaders who manage their own abysmal budgets every year; we continuously find solutions that aren’t this detrimental to our children.

The Chicago Principals and Administrators Association (CPAA) represents principals and assistant principals. While we do not negotiate or interfere in other unions' contracts, we must speak up when agreements directly impact our ability to lead schools effectively.

All submitted resolutions will undergo a review process by the AFSA Resolutions Committee.
The agreement, which was ratified this month, covers 150 directors and assistant directors, and spans from Oct. 1, 2020, through March 2028. The tentative deal includes a ratification bonus, annual retention bonuses and increases to the union’s welfare fund.

Dozens of schools across the nation led by AFSA members have been awarded Blue Ribbon designation by the U.S. Department of Education.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, started in 1982, recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

It’s Official!

Our Arbitration Bill, which passed both the House and Senate, has now been formally signed into law by Governor Pritzker! We are thrilled to celebrate its passage and want to extend our deepest gratitude to every single member who made calls, signed petitions, sent messages, and stood with us through this journey. It’s been a tough fight, but together, we’ve secured the protections we deserve as Chicago’s foremost school leaders: principals and assistant principals.

There are key players we absolutely must thank:

How many times has this sequence happened to you or someone you know?

You get sick. You go to the doctor. She or he prescribes treatment for you…antibiotics, medicines, surgery, physical therapy, whatever. Her office submits the payment claim to your insurance company. The company turns thumbs down, and you get stuck with the bill—a bill that can run into thousands of dollars or even land you in bankruptcy court.
